許多信徒研讀羅馬書時，一讀到九至十一章，就彷彿來到另一世界，覺得這三章與整卷書的神學主題無關。
不過，近期學者研究發現：如果從猶太人和外邦人的關係來看，九至十一章並非可有可無，反而是全書高潮所在！它透視了神整盤的拯救計劃，更預言全以色列將會得救……可謂懸念十足，處處精彩。
由於這三章引用了許多舊約經文，過去20年，有不少學者從文本互涉的角度來解讀。文本互涉雖是聖經研究新興之學，但要掌握適當的解釋方法，又未必那麼容易。據本書作者觀察，許多此類研究仍停留於概念層面，因此仍未能充分而恰當地解讀這三章內容。
本書參照社會符號學及系統功能語言學的理論，並修訂了萊姆克（J.L. Lemke）的文本互涉主題理論（Linguistic intertextural thematic theory），作為基本的研究方法，用以分析羅馬書九至十一章的講論模式。書中深入挖掘經文蘊藏的種種雜語（heteroglossia），讓人明暸保羅的信息，與舊約經文，甚至與第一世紀猶太族群的見解如何互動，從而透視出羅馬書裡，神、以色列人及外邦人三者的關係，以及神在終末時的整盤拯救計劃。
